Froyo on Cherry Mobile Nova

I really like to have a new phone to replace my old pre-historic one. Searching for the one that suits me, I have decided to look for a smartphone that runs Android OS.

Though many brands are available in the market and considering my budget, I whole heartedly purchased Cherry Mobile's NOVA smartphone.

Phone Specification:

OS Android OS 2.1 (Eclaire)
CPU Qualcomm MSM 7227 600MHz Processor
Screen 320x480 Capacitive touch screen (3.2")
Memory 256MB RAM; 512MB ROM
Card Slot micro SD up to 32GB
Camera 5MP; autofocus; LED Flash
Other Bluetooth; WIFI; 3G; GPS

Well, I fell in-love with this phone and was happy for buying it. Although there are other brands like Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, and others which features their own android UI; I still wanted this one even though Froyo is already out.

After a month of playing with it, I found out that some applications and other games requires Froyo. So it begins; Mission: Upgrade to Froyo.

Searching around the internet about my phone and gathering all values that I extracted from the phone (i.e. Firmware, OS version, etc...); CM's still does not release any update. Only their HD type MAGNUM phone runs Froyo. But I said to myself never give up... or may end up regretting on buying this phone.

Lurking around the internet for some information, I found out that CM's NOVA share the same specification of an OEM phone created by FOXCONN. There are many aftermarket smartphone brands which share the same specs, hardware and appearance. I stumbled upon ore which will turn to gold.

Alas, Froyo is now within reach. I have discovered CyanogenMod - a group of people which takes in Android OS development environment and creating a new Android OS which boasts of CyanogenMod's apps which will turn your smartphone to a super smartphone (hehe I just liked the term).

Will it work like before? Yes! and more powerful because you will have overall control of your phone.

Downside: if you're a noob, don't try to do this. This may cause your phone to brick (still not proven for me) and may void your phone's warranty.

This will involve rooting your phone (granting you superuser access to your phone's system files and folders), Installing new ROM, then installing Google Apps. Trying to install wrong ROM may cause your phone to not work. These reason also gets me and have come to a point in giving up this mission. But my techie brain still said go for it regarding I may have wasted my money on buying this phone then bricking it afterwards.

For the brave that will still go for it (like me) here are the steps:

First: Root your android OS - search for apps that will root your phone. This is much easier rather than accessing your phone to a PC to root it via software in PC. I would recommend Z4 root software. Just go to 4shared.com on your phone and search z4root.apk and download it.

Second: Clockwork app - This will install custom ROM which are available in the internet to your phone. After Installation try to see if the app has an update. I think it's available in the Market as "ROM Manager"

Third: Download CyanogenMod ROM and Google Apps. These are ZIP files and try not to extract them. Clockwork will install it instead. Download CyanogenMod-6.1.2-Z71 and Google Apps. Search these files at www.cyanogenmod.com Phone Model is Z71 Variants. Save it to your phone's SD card

Fourth: Run Rom Manager (by ClockworkMod) and Choose Install ROM from SD Card. Select CyanogenMod ROM you saved on your SD card and wait for it to finish. Your phone will install it and reboot, be patient when it reboots.

Fifth: Run Rom Manager again and install Google Apps the same way you install CyanogenMod ROM.

Lastly : Enjoy your Froyo CM's NOVA.

i've already rooted my CM Nova, and i'm eager (very eager) to install this custom ROm to my Nova.

Were you really able to upgrade your nova to froyo using this method? are there any bugs or hardware issues (are the bluetooth, wifi, sound working)?

Thanks in advance!

t-rex said...

Yup! I did it already... thrice.

Two last year and once this month.

A previous version of CyanogenMod ROM, then I reverted it back to its original ROM (so you must backup first your original OS, firmware, and files - clockworkmod can do this for you) Then installed it again.

This month I installed the latest stable version of Z71 variants.

how do you root this? can't seem to make the z4root work. thanks

Hi t-rex, can you post a more detailed instruction on how to install froyo? Just can't understand the 1st step in boston-mania and i'm stucked.
I have already rooted my phone using Z4. Also, i can't create a backup using clockworkmod it always display's a prompt "You must have clockworkmod recovery installed before continuing! install the recovery through ROM Manager first." when i select install it always hangs and prompts me to select from "force close" or "wait".
Help please...

Thank you.

Saw your youtube video and i believe you.

Can you explain the 1st step posted in the BOSTON MANIA?

#1 "Install the Oficial ROM 226D using the TOOLS (RUT or SUT)"

- What tools?

Thank you very much.

t-rex said...

Cited from Bostonmania

ROOT Your phone first before all of these.

1) Install the Oficial ROM 226D using the TOOLS (RUT or SUT)

This means to install the official ROM provided by their carriers. I did not even do this step. I go to the next step.

2) Get the "RomManager" app from market

You could search for it at the market named Rom Manager by Clockworkmod.

3) In "RomManager" select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"

This will install and replace the current "Recovery Mode" feature of your phone. Please try to charge your battery first.

4) Select "Commtiva Z71" phone (compatible with Boston and clones)

As stated..

5) Copy the rom update-cm-6.1.2-Z71-signed.zip and the Google Apps zip file to sdcard

You could manually download these files from your computer and upload it to your sdcard. Try to search also for the camera patch. so all in all there should be three zip files to install

BACKUP YOUR PHONE FIRMWARE. You could do this on Rom Manager. Select "Backup Current ROM"

Then save these files to a safe location or to your computer. If you like to revert back to Eclair just use these files by using the same proceedures.

6) In "RomManager" select "Install ROM from sdcard" and choose the Rom file

As stated. try to install CyanogenMod first, then google apps, then the patch.

7) Select "Install ROM from sdcard" and choose the Google Apps zip file

after this step, try to install the camera patch.

8) Reboot in Recovery Mode (camera+vol up+power)

9) Wipe All phone data

10) Enjoy Froyo :)

Thank you very much.. I will try to install tomorrow...

BTW, how many times should I see the cynogen logo during start-up?
Coz after installing the update and during restart the logo displays over and over.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Unknown said...

Does your Send/Call and End button's light works?

Mine not working..

t-rex said...

mine is working ok!??

can u describe more of your problem?

when i recieve messages my call button blinks alright.

Unknown said...

before in eclair my call and end button lights up when making a call or just by pressing it.

t-rex said...

and congrats to your patience in installing cm!! nakakapraning no?! hehe. but it all ends well.

if your talking about when your using your phone, should my call and end button lit? mine does not also, it only blinks when i recieve messages/calls or when charging. but its fine with me cause battery life is more of my goal.

next upgrade: gingerbread!

but we have to wait for stable version to mature!

Unknown said...

ah ok.. so ganun pala talaga, since last night i was searching for ways on how to make it work, yun pala ganun na pala sya.. hehehe..

Anyway, yes your right nakaka praning talaga.. hahaha.. pero bawi naman ang hirap.. hehehe..

Power down your phone.

Press Camera Button + Volume Up + Power Button

Wait for it to turn on, then release the power button while holding the other two button.

This will invoke the phone to enter recovery mode.

From recovery menu select wipe all data.

@ t-rex... i successfully installed! but then when i decided to turn it off then turned it on.. i was stucked on to the cherry mobile logo... im sure i wipe data and reboot it prior turnung it off... please help me...

t-rex said...

have you successfully rooted your phone?

try to enter recovery mode and try to install the rom you downloaded. do not install the gapps, lets just try if the rom you dowloaded is complete. after installing, select wipe data and cache then reboot. If it reboots, try to enter recovery mode again and install gapps. after installing select wipe data and cache then reboot.

ron said...

@ t-rex: i successfully installed CM! but my problem now is my wifi, it doesnt show available signals (even though you know ther are available signal nearby) ... keeps on scanning then wifi turns off itself..

t-rex said...

that was one of my problem either. I noticed it only when your phone comes from sleep or standby mode. Try to turn off your wifi then turn it on again. It will work fine. But if you let your phone go into standby mode for long period of time, your wifi also turns off. And when you reactivate your phone from standby mode, the wife tends to wake up but fails to do so (like it hanged). Thats why you have to refresh (off-on) your wifi when coming from standby.

I recently upgraded to Gingerbread and right now wifi is ok, even coming from standby modeit automatically scan and reconnect your connection.

Unknown said...

Hi t-rex,
Is it true... you have already updated to Ginger bread???

t-rex said...

uu... presently it's ok. I installed CyanogenMod 7 RC1+build2. I posted RC1+build3

Just some random reboot and FC, but not noticable. I just noticed it twice, when it was going to sleep mode then it reboots... but still random.

There are many changes and looks great. All operation was ok: call, sms, wifi, gps, headset, speakerphone. Have not tried gprs internet and tethering.

Unknown said...

t-rex, galing mo! I'll try it on nonday!
Thank you!

I'm currently using CyanogeMod7RC1+Build2.

** Make sure Your phone is Rooted **
My steps before upgrading:

1. Backup all data (in SD card) to computer.

2. Check if "ROM Manager" is updated.

3. Check if "Clockworkmod Flash recovery" is up to date. If not select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and select device "Commtiva Z71/A688".

4. From "ROM Manager", select "Backup Current ROM". This will save current ROM in to the SD card.

5. Copy backup to a safe location to your computer or CD or any media you like.

6. Download CyanogenMod7 RC1+Build2 and Google Apps and save it to your computer.

Google Apps

7. Mount your SDcard to your computer and copy the downloaded files to the SD card.

8. After copying, unmount sdcard and proceed to ROM Manager.

9. Run "Fix Permissions" to double check if device is rooted.

** You cannot install ClockworkMod Recovery/ ROM Manager if your phone is not rooted. So I assume you already rooted your phones **

10. From "ROM Manager", select "Install ROM from SD Card"

11. Select downloaded CM7RC1+B2 file from your SD card.

12. Select "Wipe Data and Cache" from ROM Pre-Installation.

13. Wait for your device to finish installing the ROM. Your device will reboot, enter recovery mode, and install ROM automatically. After Installation the device will reboot.

14. After reboot and initial setup of accounts, return to "ROM Manager". Select "Install ROM from SD card" and select the downloaded Google Apps. Select "Wipe data and cache" from pre-installation menu.

15. Your device will enter recovery mode, install ROM and reboot automatically.

16. Be Patient!

17. After Reboot, Setup your accounts and enjoy.

Update from eclair to froyo?
Update from eclair to gingerbread?

Ok lang kahit saang ROM ka galing. Just check always if your phone is rooted properly. Updated ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery.

I have also tried from Gingerbread going back to Froyo, Gingerbread going back to Eclair(stock), Froyo to Eclair, Eclair to Gingerbread, Froyo to Gingerbread.

WIFI when upgrading: from these steps needed anf wifi, because of ROM Manager updates. There is another solution on how to upgrade our NOVA's but this is the most easiest way to do and share to others.

ADOBE FLASH:

Yep, last ROM (Froyo), there was an apk for flash plugin, I have downloaded that file and tried to install but adobe flash just won't install in froyo. After installing Gingerbread I tried to search the same file from my computer and tried to install it again and it did install.

I can now play *.flv files in my NOVA.

raymond said...

ahh pede pala diretsyo na sa gingerbread. kaya po gusto ko mag upagrade dhil sa adobe flash eh.heheh. sana magawa ng maayos. thanks po sir t-rex

raymond said...

ay sir t-rex bkit po hindi gumana ung flash sa froyo mo dati?

t-rex said...

nde e... the application installation cannot be completed.. yan ung message nia when i tried to install it in froyo...

kinda off topic ako d2 pro im planning to buy my first android phone. CM nova or galaxy SL? disregarding the camera, style and durability. san ba maganda d2 in terms of internal hardware for custom rom apps. kc marami na akong nababasa sa nova na pwedeng i customize like CM7, evo, skyfish and etc.. compared to sgsl medyo wala pa or di ko palng na hanap. maramirami narin na puntahang forums. "could i compare nova/rooted to sgsl?"

crazyone said...

pwede bang i compare CM nova/rooted and galaxy SL? in terms of internal hadware for future rom apps.

my CM nova's battery life can last up to 4 days with minimal WiFi and 3d games like raging thunder. My nova is running with a cooked ROM, phantom Sky revolution V1, pretty stable for me.
